MioType vs Typeless: which Mac dictation app fits you?
Short answer: if you want one app on every device you own, or unlimited dictation with the most AI writing help, Typeless. If you work on a Mac and want to pay less, know exactly how many free words you get, or keep your voice on your own machine, MioType.
The two feel alike at first. Both put your words at the cursor in any app, and both start with the same key: press Fn, speak, press Fn again. Both translate as you speak on Fn + Left Shift. The differences are in price, platforms and what happens to your audio.
We make MioType, so read the table rather than our adjectives. Every Typeless fact below comes from its pricing page and help center, checked on October 15, 2026.

Where Typeless wins
Every device. Typeless runs on Mac — including Intel Macs — Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, with history synced between them on Pro. MioType is a Mac app for Apple silicon and nothing else. If you dictate on your phone too, that settles it.
Unlimited words. Typeless Pro has no cap. MioType Pro gives you 100,000 cloud words a month, roughly 3,300 a day. Most people never get near that; if you dictate for hours, you might.
More AI around the edges. Typeless learns your writing style over time and can answer questions with the latest information from the web, straight from the voice bar. MioType's Ask (Fn + Space) answers questions and works on selected text, but does not search the web.
Teams and compliance. Typeless sells to companies: team billing, usage analytics, and on Enterprise, single sign-on and a HIPAA business associate agreement. MioType has none of that.
Track record. Typeless has been around longer. MioType is new.
Where MioType wins
Price. Month to month, MioType is $9.99 against Typeless's $30. By the year it is $59.99 against $144. And there is a one-time $149 option, which Typeless does not offer.
A free tier you can plan around. MioType's free account is 3,000 cloud words a week, written on the pricing page. Typeless says its free plan has limited words each week but does not say how many.
Your voice can stay on your Mac. Typeless processes speech in the cloud and keeps none of it. MioType's cloud keeps no audio and no request text either — only the word count, request type and time (privacy policy) — but one switch in Settings moves recognition to a local Whisper model that runs entirely on your Mac and needs no account.
You decide how much it rewrites. Both apps clean up what you say by default. In MioType you can set the editing level to Minimal, Clean, Structured or Professional — or turn AI editing off, and dictation is typed exactly as heard. That matters for commands, code and anything where your exact words count. Typeless's site does not list a way to turn its rewriting off.
Selected text without saying a word. In Typeless you select text and speak what you want done. In MioType the common jobs have their own key: Fn + Control translates the selection between Chinese and English, select a single word and you get a dictionary card, Fn + R polishes it in place. That matters in a quiet office, or when you just want to read an English paragraph in Chinese without composing a request.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Typeless if you need Windows, Linux, an Intel Mac or a phone; dictate many hours a day; or need team billing and compliance.
- Choose MioType if you work on an Apple silicon Mac, want to pay a third of the monthly price, want a known free allowance, or want the option of keeping speech on your machine.
