Getting started
Which Macs does MioType run on?
Macs with Apple silicon. There is no version for Windows, Intel Macs, iPhone, iPad or Android.
How do I dictate?
Press Fn once and speak, then press Fn again to stop. The text appears where your cursor is. Press Esc to cancel. Every shortcut can be changed in Settings.
Which apps does it work in?
Any app with a text field: mail, chat, notes, documents and the browser. If MioType can’t type into an app, it copies the result to the clipboard so you can paste it.
What permissions does it need?
Microphone, to hear you, and Accessibility, which the Fn key and typing into other apps both need. Setup walks you through both; you can change them later in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
Which languages can I dictate in?
More than 40, or let MioType detect the language. You can also speak in one language and get the text in another. How well a language is recognized depends on the recognition service you use. The app and this website come in 10 languages.
Privacy, offline and API keys
Do I need an account?
Only for MioType Cloud, the default way speech is recognized. A free account includes 3,000 cloud words a week. Recognizing speech on your Mac or with your own API key needs no account.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once you switch recognition to the local Whisper model in Settings: it downloads once, then runs entirely on your Mac, and your voice never leaves it. AI polishing and translation still need MioType Cloud, your own API key, or a local model through Ollama.
Do you keep my voice or what I say?
No. Our servers never store audio and don’t keep the text of cloud requests; for each one they record only the word count, request type and time. Your history stays on your Mac unless you turn on Cloud sync, a paid feature that is off by default. If you attach a recording to a problem report, we delete our copy 90 days after receiving it.
Can I use my own API key?
Yes. For recognition: OpenAI, Groq, Deepgram, AssemblyAI, Alibaba Qwen, Volcengine Doubao, Zhipu GLM, SiliconFlow, or any Whisper-compatible server. For polishing and translation: OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Qwen, Doubao, Zhipu, Moonshot, SiliconFlow or Ollama. Audio and text then go straight from your Mac to the provider you chose, not through our servers.
Do my settings and dictionary follow me to another Mac?
Yes, for free, when you sign in: your settings and dictionary (words and correction rules) are stored in your account. API keys are never uploaded. Dictation history moves between Macs only with Cloud sync.
Plans, updates and help
What is free, and what do paid plans add?
Recognition on your Mac and your own API keys are free, with no limit. A free account adds 3,000 cloud words a week. Paid plans give 100,000 words a month of MioType Cloud and add Cloud sync for your history.
Can I cancel or get a refund?
Monthly and yearly plans can be cancelled any time in the app under Account → Manage subscription; you keep cloud access until the end of the period you paid for. Any purchase or renewal can be refunded in full within 14 days.
How does MioType update?
It checks for new versions and offers to install them; you can also check in Settings. What changed in each version is on GitHub.
Something went wrong. How do I tell you?
In History, open the entry and choose Report a problem; you can include the recording. You can also open an issue on GitHub or write to hi@miotype.com.
How do I delete my account?
Write to hi@miotype.com. We delete the account and all its data, and we respond within 7 business days.
